X Shape - Design and Implementation of a Modular Exhibition System

An exhibition space is essentially intended to be used as a site of communication and presentation. Therefore, the design and conception of an exhibition is closely related to location's interior design. A key component in object exhibition is the so called podium or socle, upon which the exhibits are placed for display. A reinterpretation of this element was the aim of this study. It was attempted to redefine the conventional character of the base to achieve better flexibility and more versatility. The outcome is a modular system which can be used primarily for temporary exhibition and presentation purposes. In addition, the system can be converted and utilized in other applications such as a seat, shelf or partition. The design process was accompanied by the creation of a 1:1 prototype to analyse aspects such as material selection, construction details and manufacturing. Subsequently the final product was built with the identical level of detail and materials in the model construction workshop at TU-Wien.
