EU HE REVAIL
Reclaiming building products for increasing the value of materials through their re-assembly and integration in buildings' retrofit through new circular business models
Project Description
REVAIL pioneers a scalable, circular approach to construction product reuse in Europe. The project addresses the urgent need to reduce resource inefficiency and construction waste by enabling the profitable and safe reclaiming, disassembly, and reassembly of timber, aluminum, sandwhich panels, and ceramic tile components for building retrofit solutions, specifically, interior partitions and adaptive facades. REVAIL enhances a digital regional exchange platform for mapping and matching reclaimable materials, develops advanced selective disassembly techniques, and empowers architects with a digital design-to-fabrication pipeline. All components and solutions are thoroughly characterized for performance, environmental impact, and durability after exposure to environmental and functional aging of a service life. The methodology is validated through four regional pilot value chains in Italy, Poland, France, and Greece, where materials are reclaimed and prototyped into a new building retrofit solution, rigorously tested in semi-real environments to ensure technical, environmental, economic, and social performance. The project also explores balanced human-robot collaboration in reassembly processes to support scalability and industrial adoption. REVAIL delivers strategies for reverse business models, including a reassembly-driven Circularity Value Index, and robust protocols for performance and compliance. By fostering collaboration among industry, academia, and communities, REVAIL accelerates the transition to climate-neutral, resource-efficient, and culturally valuable buildings, in line with New European Bauhaus values. The project demonstrates the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of circular construction, establishing a replicable model for sustainable transformation across Europe.
