From wearables to space
In the context of the artistic research project Trans-Bodied Knowledge*, this course focuses on an experimental design process which aims at translating haptic and kinaesthetic experiences into the design and fabrication of multi-sensorial stage design productions for music performances. The projects are conceived, designed and fabricated based on open discussions and analysis with musicians and performers, while in parallel, design reviews, discursive sessions and material workshops with architects and designers are providing additional creative inputs and technical constraints.
Students are expected to follow a design process involving a series of consecutive media-translations involving movement, sound, drawing, text, and materials. Creatively exploring the transitions from medium to medium will lead each group of students to the production of one experimental stage design solution to be realized at the 1:1 scale, and to be staged in a performative music event at the end of the semester. The outcomes of the course and the related multi-media production and experience will be part of an Open Access publication, to be published in 2026 by the TU Wien Academic Press.
The course takes place in the framework of the artistic research project “Trans-bodied Knowledge” funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within the Programme for Artistic Research (PEEK).
