‘Sound<Space<Wearables’ displays the outcomes of the course ‘Artistic Project K’, a collaboration between TU Wien and mdw. While temporarely negletting the primacy of their sense of vision, architecture students embraced the rich multi-sensorial aspects of the spatial experience to engage in an experimental design process. By using both artistic and scientific research methods, and by addressing the urgent topic of re-connection between the human body and the physical environment, students engaged in the process of translating artistic performances into playful wearable objects. Five graphic notations created by the Greek-Austrian composer Ansestis Logothetis were translated into sound improvisations and performed using a prepared grand piano and several found objects. The recordings of the improvisations were connected to architectural space through ‘worldizing’, an audio technique where dry studio recordings are played through speakers in a real-world environment and simultaneously re-recorded, thus enriched with with genuine reverberations and ambiance. Observations of bodily movements, sound improvisations, material experiments involving haptic feedback, theoretical readings and discussion sessions became the foundations for developing the exhibited wearable objects. In addition to the physical ptototypes we present the ‘worldized’ audio recordings of the sound improvsations composed and performed by the students, and a video reel showcasing the unfolding of the semester creative process.
