The topic of this semester was the design and production of a three-dimensional assemblage using a collaborative robotic arm.
Re-imagining a Pick and Place routine, a standard process in industrial automation based on the repetition, students designed additive fabricaton processes with discrete units made with various materials like clay and steel, resin and wood. After being instructed in technical and material aspects of the fabrication process, students could design their physical tools and digital processes to experiment a different way of interacting with digital production tools. Thanks to real time programming and 3d parametric modelling software, each project can be interpreted as an open-ended conversation between an extremely precise machine and highly adaptable humans looking for a material interaction.
