This summer semester, we would like to design the rooms of the newly appointed Rectorate together with you. These are very centrally located in the main building on Karlsplatz with a view of Resselpark on the 1st floor. Since the building was occupied in 1818, the fortunes of TU Wien and its predecessors have been steered from here by a long line of rectors. Their portraits are still present there. The furnishings of the rooms have changed time and again with the respective rectors in charge; with the last two rectors, for example, the atmosphere changed from heavy and baroque to an interchangeable, functional design. With the appointment of the new rectorate, concepts are now to be developed for these rooms that interpret the modern ideas of management, communication and utilisation of the rectorate but also take into account the historical and structural context. The rooms and their atmosphere as a whole are to be taken into account, and of course the rooms are also subject to a dedicated use that is to be complied with.
We will start with various workshops in which we will approach the topic associatively, build physical models of the spaces and then experiment with photos and AI to investigate different atmospheres. This phase will be followed by a three-day excursion to Munich (20-22 March) where we will visit designers, production facilities and museums to explore the topic in greater depth. After Easter, we will have a feedback workshop with the rectorate where we can get feedback on our initial ideas and ask questions. We will then go through the classic process of concept, design and realisation. At the end of the semester, plans, models and 1:1 sections with design and material statements are presented to the rectorate.
In addition to supervision, the research department also supports you with the use of our studio, workshops and library. We expect a high level of motivation and commitment from you, everything else can be learnt from us. We would therefore like the development and realisation to take place on our premises wherever possible so that we can provide feedback and support at any time if required. The workshop is involved in the process right from the start; there is the possibility and is also expected that an intensive and quality-orientated examination of the material and its processing takes place alongside the design settings.
