HARDSOFTSOFTHARD

By mixing references and bridging methods from the fields of art [1], architecture [2], toy design [3] and computational fabrication [4], the course aims at the production of an open-ended construction system at the scale of the human body. Through a practice-based approach and a constant use of 1:1 scale physical prototyping, the course will focus on the design and fabrication of three-dimensional interlocking components by using materials with contrasting properties - e.g. soft/hard, transparent/opaque, brittle/elastic, heavy/lightweight. Design and fabrication will agnostically look at both analog and digital techniques. Intuitive hand-made physical models and advanced combinatorial algorithms will be used to explore the emerging design space afforded by the parts, while traditional physical modelling methods and robotic fabrication techniques will be juxtaposed during the production phase.
