Field Fire Furnace

This year, the basic elements of fire, earth and water - linked to the Form and Design module on the theme of “Land Art” - will be brought together to form a joint object. The function of this object is a fireplace, a kiln, the infrastructure that has always been a productive companion of artistic working methods. We will focus on the different forms of ceramic kilns and the numerous possibilities of firing. So-called field firings and possible test kilns will serve as experimental arrangements in the development of a collectively built kiln. The form and function of this kiln will be defined by the objects that are developed in parallel in the Form and Design module. The construction of a kiln represents a challenge that can only be mastered collectively, which is why the social aspect of building and operating one will be of great importance. The kiln or kilns are to be built on the site of the Nicoloso brickworks in Pottenbrunn - in the immediate vicinity of the last ring kiln in Austria - and then heated and operated. Due to the nature of the project, the Artistic Project M will take place in blocks in June and July. A corresponding interest in manual work, commitment and flexibility are therefore necessary prerequisites for participation in the course.
